International road freight transport
Art-Trans organizes international cargo delivery to destinations in Europe, Asia, and the CIS. We offer a turnkey service: we select transport, prepare documents, and escort cargo through customs.
Types of international road freight transport
The choice of format depends on the shipment size, the nature of the cargo, and the budget. We work with all major types of international road freight transport.
- FTL (full truck load). The entire truck is occupied by one customer. Suitable for shipments of 5 tons or 40 cubic meters or more. The cargo does not come into contact with other shipments, and transit time is minimal. The rate is fixed per truck, regardless of the actual weight.
- LTL (less than truckload) — consolidated cargo. Vehicle space is divided among multiple shippers. The customer pays for the actual space occupied: pallets, meters, or weight. Art-Trans consolidates cargo in its own warehouse and ships it according to a fixed schedule. The minimum order is one pallet.
- ADR — dangerous goods. Transportation of chemicals, gases, flammable liquids, and other goods of ADR classes 1-9 . Drivers have ADR certificates, and vehicles are equipped with the necessary safety equipment. Routes are planned taking into account restrictions on entry into tunnels and populated areas.
- Oversized cargo . Cargo exceeding standard parameters: length over 13.6 m, width over 2.45 m, height over 2.7 m, or weight over 24 tons. We use low-deck trailers and modular platforms. We obtain permits in each country along the route and arrange escorts if necessary.
Specifics and features of road transport
The specifics of road freight delivery between different countries are based on two key agreements:
- CMR is a convention under which the carrier bears financial liability for the cargo from the moment of acceptance until delivery to the recipient.
- TIR (in Russia and the CIS countries – TIR) allows transit through several countries without intermediate customs inspections.
When crossing state borders, each cargo is declared and subject to weight control. To enter certain European countries, Russian trucks require bilateral permits, which are issued in quotas. Art-Trans obtains these permits in advance and plans routes accordingly.
Drivers adhere to the work and rest schedules of the destination country, and tachograph data is checked at checkpoints. Vehicles must comply with the Euro 5 or Euro 6 emission standards for entry into most EU countries.
What is needed for international road transport?
Required documents
Standard package: CMR consignment note—the primary transport document recording the terms of the contract and the condition of the cargo upon acceptance; TIR Carnet —for transit routes through several countries; commercial invoice with description and value of the goods; packing list with the weight and volume of each piece of cargo; export and import customs declarations. For hazardous goods—an ADR emergency card; for perishable goods—an ATP certificate.
Packaging and labeling requirements
The cargo is palletized on 1200×800 mm Euro pallets and wrapped with stretch film. Each piece of cargo is marked with the recipient’s name, destination country, order number, and the “Up” symbol. Fragile cargo is additionally marked. For ADR shipments, hazard class symbols are placed on each side of the package. Responsibility for proper packaging lies with the sender: the carrier records all comments in the CMR upon acceptance.
Customs clearance
Cargo is declared upon export from the country of departure and upon import into the country of destination. Within the EAEU, customs control occurs only at the union’s external border. Art-Trans partners with accredited brokers and submits electronic preliminary notifications in advance, reducing the time required for clearance at international border crossings . A manager verifies TN VED codes and ensures the accuracy of declarations.
Cargo insurance
The carrier’s liability under CMR is limited to 8.33 SDR per gross kilogram. This coverage is insufficient for high-value cargo. Art-Trans recommends an all-risk policy for the full commercial value: it covers theft, damage in an accident, fire, and other insured events. Insurance is issued along with the transportation request.
